The Machin Collectors Club uses the 'Type' system of the Great Britain Decimal Stamps Study Circle (GB DSB SC) to classify Window Books. This is the copyright of the GB DSB SC and is used with their permission. For visitors who are unfamiliar with this system the following descriptions are provided.

Type 1 Covers 60mm high; laminated window cut-out; code letter references on the outside back cover; rectangular (square) locking tab; stamp pane has margin (selvedge) on all four sides.
Type 1A Same as Type 1 but with rounded locking tab.
Type 2 Same as Type 1A but covers 56mm high; narrower margins.

Type 3 (H)
Type 3 Q and H/W

Covers 49mm high; no code letter reference; full size stamp reproduction replaces the laminated window of Types 1 and 2; wide crown on front cover; stamp pane has binding margin only.
Type 3A As Type 3 but yellow strip is varnished (shiny). Harrison printings only.
Type 3B As Type 3 but with changed (experimental) folding of stamp pane.
Type 4 As Type 3 but with narrower crown on front cover. All ‘Penny Black’ anniversary books are Type 4.
Type 5 Stamp reproduction on front cover is reduced size; ‘Pull Open’ on locking tab; tab has creases on Harrison books, side cuts on Walsall books but neither creases nor cuts on Questa books; new cruciform logo and revised crown emblem; crown logo omitted from back cover; black barcode on back cover; Newcastle address on inside cover.
Type 5A Walsall books only; Smaller locking tab without side cuts; cover card varnished instead of laminated.
Type 5B As Type 5 (Harrison and Questa) and Type 5A (Walsall) but with London address on inside cover; locking tab without creases on Harrison books.
Type 5C As Type 5B but with unrestricted validity notice (EC use); blue barcodes on back covers
Type 5D Walsall books only. As Type 5C but changed production method giving covers 49-50mm high; stamp pane not flush with top and bottom edges of cover.
Type 5S(1) As Type 5C (Harrison and Questa) and Type 5D (Walsall) but containing fully perforated ‘security’ stamps with a three hole ellipse on each side; ‘restricted’ validity notice (UK use) on the inside cover; two line postcode message set horizontally.
Type 5S(2) As Type 5S(1) but changed ‘unrestricted’ validity notice (EC use) and two line postcode message set vertically.
Type 5S(3) As Type 5S(3) but with added line stating 'Calls are charged at local rates' at left selvedge
Type 6 Covers 49mm high; reduced size stamp reproduction; new airmail cruciform logo and ‘International’ on front cover; ‘For letters up to 10g’ on locking tab; Airmail labels included; black barcode.
Type 6A As Type 6 but large figure on front cover omitted; contents text ranged left.
Type 6B As Type 6 but corrected wording on locking tab reads ‘For Worldwide Postcards’.
Type 6C As Types 6 and 6B but with blue barcode; containing fully perforated ‘security’ stamps with a three hole long ellipse on each side.
Type 6D As Type 6C but wording on the locking tab reads ‘Letters up to 20g’; blue barcode is larger; changed rates validity and postcode information.
Type 6E New cover design; book contains four Christmas greetings ‘stickers’ which are illustrated on the back cover; wording on the locking tab reads ‘FREE STICKERS’; changed barcode number printed vertically.
Type 7(1) 1992 Olympic and Paralympic Games - Royal Mail sponsorship.
Type 7(2) First Rupert advert. Promoting the 1993 Greetings stamp book.
